A healthy environment requires us all to work together—as individuals as well as groups. One way of protecting and improving the environment is through conservation plantings, which contribute to clean the water and air, provide habitat for native wildlife, beautify the landscape. The Woodland Edge Restoration at St. Andrew by the Bay is a conservation planting that would not be possible without the contributions of many groups and individuals.
St. Andrew by the Bay Creation Care Team
The Creation Care Team (CCT) has promoted sustainable practices at St. Andrew by the Bay and in the community since it began in 2017. Actions and events have included Earth Day Festivals, a talk by Doug Tallamy on Creating Landscapes that Enhance Local Ecosystems, youth activities to create awareness of the importance of caring for creation, and improved parish recycling practices and opportunities.
This project is led by CCT members, Cathy Tengwall and Mary Smith, with support from the entire CCT.
Watershed Steward Academy
The Watershed Steward Academy (WSA) wants every community in Anne Arundel County to be actively engaged in ensuring a healthy environment. They train and support Master Watershed Stewards to install landscape projects and conduct educational activities to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
Two members of the St. Andrew by the Bay CCT, Cathy Tengwall and Mary Smith, are currently training to become Master Watershed Stewards. The Woodland Edge Restoration at St. Andrew by the Bay is their capstone project for the course.
Replant Anne Arundel
Replant Anne Arundel is planting thousands of native trees in communities across the county! This partnership between the Watershed Steward Academy and Anne Arundel County, with support from the Helena Foundation will provide training for Tree Troopers, volunteers who are trained to lead the tree planting projects, and resilient trees.
For our project at St. Andrew by the Bay, we will be planting 20 trees obtained through Replant Anne Arundel. We are seeking donors to “adopt a tree” by contributing the $20 co-pay for the tree.
Unity Gardens
Unity Gardens envisions everyday citizens working together to benefit the environment. As an Anne Arundel County nonprofit, they support this work by providing funding for community groups to purchase native plants.
For our project at St. Andrew by the Bay, we will be planting more than 50 shrubs purchased with a grant from Unity Gardens.
Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake
Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake (IPC) engages faith communities across the Chesapeake watershed in caring for the watershed. The IPC works to make congregations aware of ways they can contribute to restoring clean water and environmental justice. They also help congregations to plan, pay for, and install conservation plantings.
In addition to helping to fund our project at St. Andrew by the Bay, the IPC has helped parish leaders engage the community in caring for creation through their Faithful Green Leaders Training and Learning Lab Webinars.
St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church
St. Andrew by the Bay Parish celebrates and witnesses to God’s presence through worship and prayer, learning and proclaiming the gospel of Jesus, service to God’s people, and stewardship of the gifts God has entrusted to us.
In addition to the work done by the Creation Care Team, about 90 parish volunteers planted 60 trees several years ago. Some are still helping with maintenance! We are confident that members of the parish will step up to help with this project as well.
